There we were, a group of nine queens ready to let loose, party, and celebrate my birthday in true New Orleans fashion - have lots of FUN! Walking to our reserved table inside the main dining room, I spanned the room to see if the band was set up and ready to go. Instead, I spotted and smelled the delicious buffet table, bar, and noticed a covered piano on a raised stage near what looked like a dance floor. The excitement and anticipation level inside me elevated to the level of READY. According to the tour guide there are over 50 cats living at the home and many of them are polydactyl (six-toed). No, I didn’t see half that number of cats there, but the ones I did see really freaked me out. It was however impressive to learn that they care for and treat the cats, who share a common genetic make-up, with dignity and name them after famous people or characters from books and film. I did enjoy meeting Daisy the cat named after the character in The Great Gatsby and my husband’s favorite, Billie Holliday. Knowing that Hemmingway lived much of his life in Cuba and started his early career living and writing in Paris really cemented that life experiences are the true power for influencing a level of creativity that is lasting. Sitting high above Dubai, atop the Burj Khalifa, dining in Atmosphere's private room it began to feel normal. It was almost as if my spirit was at rest because I was finally feuling it with the type of life that I am meant for. Not once did I feel awkward or out of place among the opulence and EXTRAordinariness that the restaurant or Dubai has to offer. Instead, waves of gratitude overcame me. This dinner, hosted by the amazing Suncera Johnson took place on our first night and it set a positive tone as we took turns gifting each other pink swag bags filled with thoughtful gifts to further enhance or trip experience. The million dollar question I get asked frequently is, “What was the highlight of the trip?”. My answer is absolutely “everything”! How can I rank a private dinner with a world class chef, brunch fit for royalty, a yoga class in an aquarium, spa treatments that single-handedly defined self-care, riding on a camel in the desert as the sun set, visiting a mosque during Ramadan, a beautiful Dhow dinner cruise, and an afternoon boat tour? I simply can’t and I realize that I don’t need to. This trip that I didn’t know my soul needed taught me that it’s perfectly normal for everything to be EXTRAordinary! The hardest thing about going on this trip was packing for it. Keeping my luggage underweight and remembering to pack clothing that was conservative, yet cool, certainly challenged me. I’m an island girl who is trained to wear less clothing in the blazing sun, not more. When they say that “travel is the best education”, these are some of the lessons that one can learn. Shopping and bartering the price of souvenirs in the Souk gave me an opportunity to hone that skill, which has served me well on all other trips abroad. To date, I’ve travelled to 80 countries and I’ve seen all 7 wonders except the Taj Mahal. About half of these visits were solo (40/50 countries). For me, the most extraordinary places are Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Petra in Jordan. They each have their own unique beauty and vibe, but what stands out are the intricate carvings, rich history, scenery, culture and of course the people. What is the most important thing that you have learned about yourself on this journey? I’ve grown to learn to trust my gut feeling/intuition and that I believe that 90% of people don’t want to do you any harm. I enjoy the feeling of going to someplace that I don’t see all the time and then when I see it it blows my mind. After my first experience, I could feel that there was a greater need for me to delve deeper into the grandeur of Diner en Blanc. Through this opportunity of being a Table Leader, it was time to explore the full potential of what the experience could be for myself and anyone blessed enough to be on my team of 25 tables with 50 individuals. You see, leaders have a distinct way of noticing areas for improvement, positioning themselves to create positive change, and motivating others to fulfill the assignment/task. Thankfully, it was my fate that I would become a volunteer on the leadership team the year after a disastrous event. Like any strong organization, change was imminent and effective in making certain that this year’s celebration went off without as many hitches as previous years. In my group of 25 tables, four tables with seven friends made up a core group that worked together to enhance our DEB experience. There was a detailed amount of planning, strategizing, and communication that went into ensuring that our section was cohesive and EXTRAordinary. Truly, there was no time or space for negativity because everyone needed to pull their own weight, and that was easy since we all shared the same motive of wanting to have the best time during this year’s event. Most importantly, it was absolute confirmation that the eight of us made a perfect team when our spirits weren’t shattered as we were forced to scramble to pack everything up in a hurry with wind, lightning, and very little light put an end to what was set to be an amazing evening.
